Journal 19

Describe some of Holden’s behaviors. Why do you think he’s experiencing so many inner struggles? What do you think has contributed to his psychotic issues? Do you think he needs counseling? Does analyzing Holden this way make you feel more sympathetic to him as a character (remember he’s only 16)?

Holden's behaviors are weird and as some would see it, not normal. I think his inner struggles come from stress that he puts his mind through with the things going on. His life style most definitely has contributed to a lot of his psychotic issues. I don't know if he needs counseling or he just needs a friend or something to help him not always so judgmental. I don't feels sorry for him because he put himself in this position so he deserves what he gets.

Holden wrote about an artifact (Allie’s mitt) that is important to him. It isn’t anything of extreme value, but it’s something he finds meaningful. Write about an artifact that means something to you. It can be something you’ve had since you were little or something that’s extremely important to you right now. Describe the artifact and then explain why you value it so much.

      School is a important artifact in my life right now. I need to focus on getting good grades, and going to school everyday. I value it so much because i need it to have a succesful life and cant mess that up.

What lie does Holden tell on the train? Why do you think he does this? What does this say about his personality/ mental state? Be specific.

He lies to  Mrs Morrow to make her feel better about her son, telling her how amazing and cool he was. When the truth is he wasnt that person. I think he does it to have someone to talk to that would have the same thing in common because hes so lonely. It says that hes not in the right state of mind to lie, and to lie about things so stupid makes his personality sketchy and his mental state not too good.

Write Holden’s essay about Allie’s mitt that he wrote for Stradlater. Write the essay exactly how you think Holden would have.

 [ Allie’s name was changed in the essay, don’t know what to. Sowwy! Making up my own…. Ex (friend) and (john) ]

I had a friend once, his name was John and unfortunately he passed away a few years ago. Before he died, he wrote me these poems in green ink on his baseball mitt.  John had a left-handed baseball mitt. John had written poems all over his fielder's mitt in green ink, so as to have something to read when he was bored in the outfield. John died of leukemia, about four years ago, and that he was a great kid. The night John died; Stradlater slept in the garage and punched out all the windows. John’s had written poems all over his fielder's mitt in green ink, so as to have something to read when he was bored in the outfield. Stradlater tells us that John was a great kid. Stradlater obviously misses him.

Discuss how Holden copes with people around him, alienating, isolating, and pushing people away on purpose. Be specific.

Holden is definitely a different person. He doesn’t do too well with socializing with the people around him. He alienates himself from the school he was kicked out of by not going in the student section at games and not being adventurous to go out with friends rather than sit in his room and stare at the window. He isolates himself from any other students that go their except for his roommates, having very little “friends”. He pushes people that care away like his professor, when he was talking to him, giving him advice to straighten up he just wanted to leave because he feels like it’s a bad thing to get close to someone or people because they w ill just let you down.

Research is going good. For Wednesday I need more pictures but as far as information goes I have most of it if not all I need. I'm going to research more and find more information and pictures.

Journal 12

The poem connects with the story because it talks about death and faith and misfortune. In which all those things plus more are introduced with the story.
Brothers, men who live after us,
Let not your hearts be hardened against us,
Because, if you have pity for us poor men,
God will have more mercy toward you.
You see us here attached five or six:    5
When our flesh that was nourished so well
Is over time devoured and putrified,
And we, the bones, have become cinders and powder.
Let no one laugh at our misfortune:
But pray that God absolve us all!     10

If we call you, brothers, you ought not
To have disdain even though we were killed
By law. Often, you know
That not all men have a righteous mind;
Excuse us, now that we have passed,  15
Toward the son of the Virgin Mary,
That her grace will not be slow for us,
Preserving us from the infernal fire.
We are dead, no soul harries us;
But pray that God absolve us all!     20

The rain has washed and purified us,
And the sun has dried and blackened us:
Magpies, crows have dug out our eyes
And pulled out our beards and eyebrows.
Never do we have rest;             25
The changeable wind blows us first this way, then that,
To its pleasure without ceasing,
Our skin has more bird peckings than if it were sewed.
Do not leave our company then;
But pray that God absolve us all!     30

Prince Jesus, who is lord of all,
Keep us from the tyranny of Hell:
Let the Devil have no claim over us
Men, make no mockery here;
But pray that God absolve us all!     35

J #10

I wasn’t to shocked by the confession only because I knew he had been a part of the murder and realized dick was a more vicious person than perry so it was all perrys doing. When he talks about the details he refers to dick wanting to thing slike rape nancy or the plans of the murders. Even though perry is a murderer he knew he was in the wrong and and dick on the other hand was so messed up he didn’t care.
